Development Cooperation
Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID)
The Australian Government's overseas aid program advances Australia's national interest by assisting developing countries to reduce poverty and achieve sustainable development. The Government's overseas aid program is managed by AusAID, the Australian Agency for International Development.
The South Asia Framework for 2003 to 2007 provides a basis for Australia's aid program to Bangladesh. The framework highlights the need for support in the areas of good governance and improved basic service delivery with an emphasis on health, education and natural resource management at the state and community level.
Australia has provided development assistance since Bangladesh’s independence in 1971. The Australian aid program to Bangladesh started as humanitarian relief, but today assistance is predominantly in the form of sustainable development initiatives.
The Australian aid program in Bangladesh focuses on food security and nutrition, primary education, health, human resource development through Australian scholarship programs, HIV/AIDS, microfinance, governance and agriculture. Humanitarian and emergency support is available when Bangladesh is faced with natural disasters.
